Navigating the Nautical Disaster: The Story Behind a Legendary Lake of the Woods IPA

For nearly a century, trouble and tragedy seemed to stalk the steamships, sailors, and captains who traveled the vast waters of Lake of the Woods. The still surface and wide-open stretches often hid unexpected danger. Beneath those calm waves were the risks of reefs, storms, and sudden mishaps that claimed both passenger and cargo alike. Nautical Disaster Dry Hopped IPA is a toast to that history.

BEER STYLE: India Pale Ale; COLOUR: Light gold, clear; AROMA: Slight grapefruit, citrus and hops nose; HEAD: White, medium retention; HOPS: Cascade, Chinook, Citra, Nugget; MOUTHFEEL: High carbonation yet smooth. Finishing with a slight dryness; TASTE: Hoppy bitterness mixed with a citrus taste; VITAL STATS; ABV: 7% – IBU: 55 – SRM: 6

Packed with Triple C hops and filled to the gunwales with bold grapefruit character, this IPA is the answer for anyone caught between the Devil and the deep blue lake. It pairs beautifully with sweet dishes, spicy foods, and very large anchors. Navigate responsibly.

The inspiration for Nautical Disaster IPA comes directly from the many stories of the steamships that once called Lake of the Woods home. From the late 1800s through the early 1900s, steamers ferried people from Rat Portage, known today as Kenora, to Fort Frances, Rainy River, and Warroad in the United States. They carried passengers, freight, and in many cases helped haul log booms to the sawmills that powered the region. Many of these ships eventually met their end below the surface, claimed by the treacherous, reef-filled waters. Thankfully, there is also what we like to call the Not so Nautical Disaster. It is a not so disastrous IPA that is a little hazy and perfect for enjoying all day long.

This IPA earns its personality through dry hopping, the process of adding hops to an already fermented ale. If grapefruits held a lively party and tangerines arrived with a few pine trees and a bouquet of flowers for the table, the result would be a full blown Nautical Disaster of a shindig. Bright, aromatic, refreshing, and packed with character, this beer carries the spirit of the lake and the stories that shaped it. Raise a glass to the legends of Lake of the Woods and to an IPA with a tale as bold as its flavor.
